Man hospitalized after being shot by son in Carmel, sheriff's office says

The teenager was taken into custody without further incident, according to the Penobscot County Sheriff's Office.

CARMEL, Maine — An investigation is ongoing into a shooting in Carmel Monday evening that left a father injured.

Just before 4 p.m., the Penobscot Regional Communication Center received a report that a father had been shot by his teenage son in the area of Main Road, according to a news release from the Penobscot County Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff's deputies and investigators responded and quickly found the father, and the son was located inside the residence which was secured by law enforcement.

A firearm was reportedly seized and "an appropriate level of resources was utilized to ensure the public was not at further risk."

The father was brought to a hospital with a gunshot wound to his torso, and he "remains in stable condition," the sheriff's office said. The teenager was taken into custody without incident, and a "decision on placement" had not been made as of Tuesday afternoon.

"This dangerous incident and investigation [continue] to reveal the ongoing challenges with our current juvenile criminal justice process, [statutes], and mental health system."

A NEWS CENTER Maine reporter at the scene observed a notable police presence of roughly 10 cruisers lining the roadway at the time of the incident. The Penobscot County Sheriff's Office said in the release they were assisted by the Bangor Police Department, Maine Warden Service.

Drivers in the area at the time of the incident were encouraged to seek an alternative route.
