Myler Makes It: Valentine's Day Treats

NEWS CENTER Maine's Aaron Myler went to Sisters Gourmet Deli in Bath, where they're making some holiday treats.

BATH, Maine — Myler Makes...Valentine's Day Chocolates!

I went to Sisters Gourmet Deli in Bath to make some different chocolate items for Valentine's Day!

This trip was one of the most fun that we've had so far. We got to hang out with owner Michaela McVetty to learn how to do make a few different things for the holiday.

So first off is a classic: chocolate covered strawberries.

It's not rocket science. You take strawberries and dip them in chocolate. Michaela had a couple tips, though. Start off by putting a skewer into the top of each one. It helps you hold onto it while you dip. Michaela also said you want to pull back the leaves of the strawberry so you can dip the chocolate all the way to the top. It helps them look professional and less homemade, plus there's more chocolate. Give them a lil shake to get rid of the excess chocolate and you're good to go.

Here comes the fun part where you can make it your own. You can add a drizzle, Oreo crumbs, chocolate chips, sprinkles, anything to take it more unique  For better or for worse, there was a massive difference between my homemade strawberries and her professional touch.

Don't like strawberries? We've got ya covered. You can dip pretty much anything you like into chocolate. We dipped apple slices, pineapple, and Oreos! Michaela said the trick for the pineapple is to freeze it about an hour in advance so the chocolate sticks.

Then came the showstopper: a breakable chocolate heart. These are those hearts that you see on Instagram where you fill a chocolate heart with goodies and then take a wooden mallet and whack it open.

Surprisingly, it was a lot simpler than I had imagined. You take a heart-shaped silicone mold and fill it with a little bit of melted chocolate. You don't need much, just enough to get a nice layer on the outside. It's supposed to be hollow.

Then, after it cools, you can decorate it with whatever you want -- a message to a significant other, some chocolate or candy, etc. We chose edible gold to coat the outside of our heart. It. was. shiny. I loved it.

After that, you just put whatever you want inside of the heart. Maybe a heartfelt note, or more candy?

The moment I waited all day for has finally come...time to break open the heart! It really is a fun activity that you get to eat afterwards. It comes with a little wooden mallet for you to break it open and expose the goodies inside.

Here's some good news: Michaela makes these hearts so you don't have to. And she sells them year-round so you can use it for any holiday you'd like.

A huge thank you goes out to Michaela McVetty and everyone at Sisters Gourmet Deli for having me out! Happy Valentine's Day!
