Head shaving at UMaine to help raise money for childhood cancer research

A buzz for a cause.

ORONO (NEWS CENTER Maine) -- People in Orono came together Wednesday to get a new look and raise money for childhood cancer research.

Participants got sponsors to go bald in order to raise money for the St. Baldrick's Foundation, which benefits childhood cancer research. More than 30 people signed up to have their heads shaved.

All the brave — and bald — souls had personal reasons for taking part: Some did it in honor of a loved one, others did it to show children not be afraid of losing their hair.

Sue Farris has been participating for the past nine years.

"It's hard enough to be a kid as it is these days without having to deal with the effects of chemotherapy," she said, "so at least this way, I know what they feel like and It's just a little thing I can do to help."

One little guy who was also helping out was 5-year-old Kellan Tilton of Detroit, Maine. Tilton was born with cancer and he is an ambassador for the cancer research foundation.
