YORK COUNTY, Maine — The Center for Wildlife in Cape Neddick swooped into action after a community member brought in a bald eagle who was struck by a vehicle on the highway.
Believed to be five years old, the bird suffered a compound humerus fracture (broken wing), according to a Tuesday social media post by the wildlife center. Staff said the bone had ruptured through the skin, causing bruising and soft tissue damage as well.
"Our team quickly got to work examining and stabilizing this majestic bird, and our volunteer veterinarian of over 25 years, Dr. John Means came in to perform surgery," the post stated. "John pinned it with a metal rod, similar to human procedures. The eagle is now in our ICU under guarded condition and prognosis, but we are so glad he has survived the traumas thus far."
The Center for Wildlife is a nonprofit and relies on donations to treat animals. So far they have raised $407 to help the eagle on his road to recovery, according to the post.
