Troy Murphy makes the U. S. Olympic Team

Helping to secure his spot on the U.S. Freestyle Ski Team, Troy Murphy is one of only two Americans to make the podium in a World Cup event this year

PARK CITY, Utah (NEWS CENTER Maine) -- The United States Ski Association announced its Freestyle Ski Team on Monday. Among its 30 members is Troy Murphy of Bethel and Sunday River.

The 25-year-old skier just missed making the team for Sochi.

This time it was more clear cut. Murphy was the U.S. champion last year and finished sixth in the World Cup standings.

This year, he started well, again leading the American ski team in the standings. However, he went cold for three events and needed a strong performance at Mont-Tremblant in Quebec over the weekend to nail down the spot.

Troy Murphy of Bethel learned on Jan. 22, 2018 that he made the Olympic Freestyle Ski Team

One of only two Americans to make the podium in a World Cup event this year, Murphy's ranking as the second American in the standings locked up his position.

Because of his strong aerial program, it would not be surprising if he earned an Olympic medal.

The aerial competition will take place the first week of the Olympic Games in PyeongChang
