'It’s just plain sad': Neighbor describes feelings after Bowdoinham death

Bowdoinham woman found unconscious by deputies dies at the hospital

► UPDATE: Teenage boy charged with murder of Bowdoinham woman

BOWDOINHAM (NEWS CENTER Maine ) - Maine State Police are investigating the death of a woman who was found severely injured inside her home in Bowdoinham.

Marie Sylvester, 55, was unresponsive when sheriff’s deputies responded to her home Monday morning. She was taken to Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick, then transferred to Maine Medical Center, where she died Monday night.

Sylvester’s family members gathered inside her small mobile home on Post Road. Her son-in-law described her as a sweet Bowdoinham woman. He said other than that, the family didn’t have anything to say at this time and they were just letting the police handle the investigation. He did say that she lived here with her grandson. Neighbors say he was more like a son to her.

“He’s her grandson by birth, but she had adopted him, so he was really like her son," said neighbor Stephanie Delano.

As word of her death spread to neighbors, one of them summed it up this way.

“What can I really say, it’s just plain sad,” said neighbor Dale Mosher.

Neighbors NEWS CENTER Maine spoke with say they didn’t know her too well. They say they would chat with her from time to time and give a ride to the store once in awhile. They say she seemed to struggle to get by.

“I feel very badly. I did know Marie some, and I just feel really badly that this happened,” said neighbor Diana Mosher.

In this rural community, things are usually very quiet. Now people who live on this street have a lot of questions about what happened on Post Road and why.

“It’s tragic. A loss of life is a loss of life. It’s sad it happened so close to home here,” said Delano.

Police say an autopsy has begun, but more work needs to be done before they reach any conclusions. They do say the public is not in any danger.
