DHHS warns of person impersonating child protective caseworker

DHHS is warning of a person impersonating a caseworker in southern Maine but officials believe it was an isolated incident.

SOUTH PORTLAND (NEWS CENTER Maine) — The Maine Department of Health and Human Services is warning clients that someone is allegedly impersonating a caseworker in southern Maine.

DHHS says in what appears to be an isolated incident a person impersonated a child protective caseworker in South Portland.

DHHS is reminding Mainers that all employees are issued an identification card and are supposed to show their ID to the families they are working with. Caseworkers are not allowed to refuse to show their ID card if asked.

DHHS identification cards include:

• The Maine DHHS logo

• A picture of the DHHS employee

• The name of the DHHS employee

• The title of the DHHS employee

• A number to contact if the ID card is lost

DHHS says, clients should ask to see ID cards and can call 1-800-452-1999 if they want additional confirmation.
