Joyce McLain's mother reacts to cold case arrest

EAST MILLINOCKET, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The 1980 Joyce McLain cold case has rocked the East Millinocket community for more than 3 decades -- and finally, there is some relief.

But no one is more relieved than Joyce's mother, Pam McLain.

35 years ago, Joyce's body was found in the woods right behind Schenck High School. Pam McLain said she's waited to hear that state police made an arrest for years -- but she never thought that day would be Friday.

She's had a candle lit on her front porch for more than 35 years -- since Joyce's body was found. And she said it's finally time to turn it off.

"i'm just awe struck," Pam told NEWS CENRER "When he said we are going to make an arrest today, that was my reaction, nothing, and I'm a talker. So I was speechless, and I'm still not quite sure, it still hasn't sunk in."

This cold case has rocked the East Millinocket community for decades, and Pam says she has received a lot of support, including an endless number of phone calls.

Philip Scott Fournier of East Millinocket was arrested and charged with the 1980 murder Friday at around 11 a.m. Fournier is on the registered sex offenders list for possession of child pornography.
Joyce McLain was 16 when she died. She disappeared while jogging on a summer night in 1980 not far from Schenck High School. Her body was found a few days later near the jogging trail she used.
