Thousands of CMP customers face another night in the dark

CMP hopes to get all customers back online by Friday

SANFORD (NEWS CENTER Maine) — Thousands of Central Maine Power customers are looking at spending another night in the dark following yet another huge storm.

Heavy, wet snow brought down trees and power lines throughout central and southern Maine. One of the hardest hit areas was York County where some communities received the largest amount of snowfall.

Sanford, according to the National Weather Service received the highest amount of snowfall at 19 inches.

At one point on Thursday, more than 10,000 people were without power.

In Kittery, a tree fell on a transmission line blowing out two substations. That cut power to 5,000 CMP customers forcing the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard to rely on generators. In Eliot, tree branches brought down lines leaving the entire town – about 3,700 customers – in the dark.

Carroll Emory and his wife, residents of Kittery, lost power briefly but tree limbs came down on his car and throughout his yard. Now he wants to cut his trees down to keep it from happening again.

"I am just glad the big ones didn't come down on the house – that's the important thing," Carroll Emory said.

CMP officials hope to get all of their customers back online by Friday.
