PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Outgoing Congressman Mike Michaud is finishing up a 34-year career in politics.

He left his Second Congressional District seat to run for governor, but lost to Paul LePage in a close race. Bruce Poliquin will now be taking his place in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Despite a loss this November, Michaud has no regrets about his gubernatorial campaign. While he does think the race got heated and said his opponents attacked him with false ads, he also said he'll continue to fight for the state he grew up in and plans to retire in. However, retirement isn't likely in the near future.

Michaud wouldn't comment on any political ventures but does plan to follow through on what he started in Congress, like reorganizing the Department of Veterans Affairs, securing a contract for New Balance to supply the military's athletic shoes, and working to turn Maine's natural resources into renewable energy.

Michaud said he's proud of what he was able to do for veterans nationwide and for Maine's economy and environment.

He said his advice to Poliquin is not to get caught up in party politics and focus only on what's best for Maine.

While he's likely not done with politics yet, for now he'll enjoy his time off in his hometown with his new dog Max.
