UMaine students the driving force behind 'Sustain Maine'

A group of University of Maine students are looking to raise funds for community-based energy programs in the state.

ORONO (NEWS CENTER Maine) -- If you have a car, then you can help their cause.

A group of University of Maine students is looking to raise funds for community-based energy programs in the state.

The "Sustain Maine" specialty license plate is designed to raise awareness and money for programs that produce renewable energy and work to improve energy efficiency and sustainability.

UMaine student Jessie Huff designed the plate, which features a moose and Maine evergreens, atop a light bulb base, with a sun shining bright behind.

Despite there already being many charity license plate options in the state, "Sustain Maine" organizer Garrett Raymond believes the community-based organizations the plates support are doing more than just creating sustainable energy.

"We think these community-based programs are a great way to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, bring communities together, and help Maine families keep their homes warm through winter," says Raymond, a master's student at UMaine. "I think it's important that we protect our environment and having a more sustainable energy system is a really important step in doing that."

Two-thousand people need to pre-order the plate before the state will authorize them. Once that happens, the plates will start generating funds for local sustainability efforts.
