The announcement is a work of fiction, but very funny one.

PORTLAND (NEWS CENTER Maine) — Stephen King novels are filled with suspense and surprises, and apparently, so are his April Fools jokes.

On April 1st a new campaign website was launched called King 4 Maine 2018. announcing the horror author's run for governor.

The front page states:

"After years of criticizing Governor Paul LePage, Stephen is considering making a run for Governor in 2018. Friends and fans alike have been telling him that he could do the job better. He has taken that encouragement to heart and decided to test the waters, but would like your input."

The link to his "campaign video" is the music video to Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up."

The top of the page says, "Are you crazy?! Political office is one horror story that even Stephen King doesn’t want to do. Happy April Fool's Day!"

Back in 2014, King pulled off a very similar joke where he announced that he would be, "returning to the story of Dennis Guilder in 2015 with CHRISTINE LIVES, the sequel to his 1983 novel Christine. CHRISTINE LIVES picks up where Christine left off, and follows the trials and tribulations of Dennis's descent from school teacher to carnival barker as he attempts to evade the smoking tires of fate."

It is unclear if King was the mastermind behind this year's prank. Either way, it's one to remember.
