Scholarship fund created in name of fallen Berwick firefighter

Friends and former classmates of Captain Joel Barnes have started a donation drive to The Old Orchard Beach Alumni Scholarship Fund in Barnes’ name.

OLD ORCHARD BEACH, Maine — Friends and former classmates of a Berwick firefighter who died in March have started a donation drive to a scholarship fund in his name.

Captain Joel Barnes died while fighting a four-alarm blaze at a three-story apartment building in Berwick.

The donation drive goes to the Old Orchard Beach Alumni Scholarship Fund, and money donated in Capt. Barnes' name will be awarded to any qualifying recipient entering the career of firefighting or Emergency Medical Technicians.

"With his extreme bravery and commitment to public service, he will be inducted into The Old Orchard Alumni Hall of Fame in September," wrote Old Orchard Beach Alumni Association president Mark Andrews.
