Body of missing Rockland man found in ocean

The man had been reported missing and police were searching for him after he was last known to be downtown in the area of Tillson Avenue around 2:30 a.m. Friday.

ROCKLAND, Maine — The body of a missing Rockland man was recovered from the ocean in Rockland Harbor on Friday afternoon.

According to Rockland police in a Facebook post, the man's body was discovered at about 1 p.m. in the water off of Tillson Avenue by Maine Marine Patrol officers.

The man's death is under investigation by detectives with the Rockland Police Department's Criminal Investigations Division, according to the post. Investigators are working with the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta to determine the cause of death.

The man was initially reported missing, and police were searching for him after he was last known to be downtown in the area of Tillson Avenue around 2:30 a.m. Friday, police said. Before discovering his body, police were attempting to locate him and check his wellbeing.

Police stated in the post no foul play is suspected at this time and there is no known threat to the community.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, and we ask that you respect the privacy of the decedent's family and loved ones as they grieve. For this reason, the prior photographs and names have been removed from the post," the post stated.

The Maine Department of Marine Resources, U.S. Coast Guard, Rockland Fire & EMS Department, and Knox Regional Communications Center assisted in this incident.
