Ethics investigation to begin for Bangor city councilor

The investigation involving a Bangor city councilor's possible ethics violation is set to begin Tuesday evening, it's the first time an ethics investigation has been done in over 20 years.

BANGOR (NEWS CENTER Maine) -- The investigation involving a Bangor city councilor's possible ethics violation is set to begin Tuesday evening -- it's the first time an ethics investigation has been done in over 20 years.

City councilors voted earlier this month to investigate whether or not councilman Cary Weston violated conflict of interest rules by not disclosing his company did business with an organization receiving city funds.

His business, Sutherland and Weston Marketing company, provides web services for Greater Bangor Convention & Visitor's Bureau. Weston claims at the time the budget was voted on he did not know his company was still receiving funds from the bureau.

Saying to NEWS CENTER Maine in an interview earlier this month, "I didn't know them to be true at the time I was asked the question, when I found out that was not the right answer I went back and corrected my mistake and served an apology."

If the ethics board finds he is in violation he could face a fine or be censured.
