SOUTHWEST HARBOR (NEWS CENTER Maine) -- Three people escaped serious injury after going into the icy water in Southwest Harbor late Wednesday evening.

Two teenage girls and their father crashed through the Long Pond ice in Southwest Harbor and narrowly escaped with their lives, according to Maine Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Spokesperson Corporal John MacDonald.

Early details of the investigation indicate the Mount Desert Island family went through the ice while on their snowmobile just offshore of Long Pond.

The trio was able to get to shore, and the father, 43-year-old Eli Strauss, left on foot for help.

Officials were notified by the mother that the three hadn't returned home when expected, so Lt. Mike Miller with Southwest Harbor Police began a search. He located the two teens hollering for help along the shore of the pond.

Mr. Strauss was located a short time later, unable to walk due to hypothermic symptoms.

According to MacDonald, 'All three are being treated for hypothermia at Mount Desert Island Hospital in Bar Harbor where their prognosis’ appears to be good.'

The Maine Warden Service will return to Long Pond to assess the ice conditions and to retrieve the sled from the water.
