30th annual Lobster Dip hosted to benefit Maine Special Olympics

OLD ORCHARD BEACH (NEWS CENTER Maine) -- Mainers raised $116,000 for Special Olympics of Maine by taking a dip in the icy ocean.

277 people gathered at The Brunswick Hotel today to take part in the 30th annual Lobster Dip.

Started by Rocco Frenzilli, people come out every year to take part in taking a cool dip in the ocean during the winter to help raise money for Maine's Special Olympics Program.

Frenzilli was inspired to start the Lobster Dip in Maine after participating in a similar event in Rhode Island. Even after 30 years, he still gets excited about the dip and loves seeing the community come together to give back.

"It's just a great feeling. You know, you are doing some good for a lot of people, and that's what its all about. Giving back."

The Lobster Dip has brought in over one million dollars in funding to support the Maine's Special Olympics, and the total amount raised this year will be announced next week.

All proceeds fund equipment, attire and even health supplies that help make an athlete's dream come true.
