MAINE, USA — After record cold over the weekend, a storm is moving in today with largely rain.
Fortunately, most of the precipitation is holding off until later, and we've avoided any issues for the morning drive.
But the temperatures at the ground will remain near or below freezing. This makes freezing rain (rain that falls, then freezes once it hits the ground) a concern.
Drizzle and light rain will develop in southern Maine during the late morning and early afternoon. It'll be cold enough for this rain to glaze over on untreated surfaces (roads, driveways, sidewalks, etc).
It will take until this afternoon for the precipitation to move north, and it will take all day to arrive in northern Maine.
Temps will creep above freezing through the afternoon and evening as steadier rain continues to fall. But it will remain cold enough for ice inland, especially in the foothills and mountains.
Late tonight, the atmosphere will get cold enough for rain showers to flip to snow showers. The snow showers will continue through tomorrow morning before tapering off midday Tuesday. There will be some minor accumulations possible, especially in the foothills and mountains where a few inches will fall.
A side note: Tides are a bit higher than normal. Add the storm offshore, some minor flooding and beach erosion is possible during Monday afternoon's high tide, between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.
