Spring nor'easter: Rain, mountain snow, coastal flooding

Potent nor'easter developing as spring begins

We haven't seen many nor'easters this cold season, but as we turn the corner to spring, one is developing for the end of the week.

I’m calling it a “spring” nor’easter not only because of the new season, but because it looks like it’ll behave a lot like a spring storm: Many of us will see a windswept rain, while significant snow accumulation should be confined to higher elevations.

The highest astronomical tides of the month are on Friday, thanks to this week’s supermoon. That’s bad timing.

The 12 p.m. high tide on Friday is the one I'm most concerned about at least minor flooding and splashover, but moderate flooding is possible depending on the storm’s strength and surge. Other high tides may be affected, late Thursday night and late Friday night/Saturday, depending on the storm's speed.

For many of us, Friday morning will be wet and windy, with downpours rolling through. Wintry mix and snow will be confined to the higher elevations, especially along and north of Route 2.

1 inch or more of rain is possible, especially in southern and eastern Maine.  Tomorrow morning's commute won't be fun with temporary street flooding and hydroplaning issues.  Rivers should be ok for the most part, but river ice may move around and jam them up in spots.

The heaviest rain will shift into northern Maine during the afternoon, with lingering showers farther south.

Friday night and Saturday morning, colder air may drain back down to the coast, allowing a flip from rain showers to snow showers. Not much accumulation is expected, but coatings are likely in spots.

3 to 6 inches of snow is likely in the mountains, especially in the higher elevations. This will be heavy, wet snow and in areas that see 6 inches or more, power outages will be possible.
