Memorial Day weekend: A look at the weather to expect in Maine

This weekend doesn't look great, but there should be plenty of dry hours allowing for some time to get outside.

Memorial Day weekend is here, and we know weather-wise it can be hit and miss in Maine. This weekend doesn't look great, but there should be plenty of dry hours allowing for some time to get outside.

Here's a breakdown of what to expect day by day.

FRIDAY

By far, this will be the most summery day of the weekend. It will be hot, dry and breezy with a mix of sun and clouds. High temperatures will rise through the 80s and a couple of spots may approach 90 degrees. Even the coast should be hot thanks to the westerly landbreeze, which will prevent a seabreeze from developing.

SATURDAY

A front starts to come down from the north on Saturday. This front will split the state with cooler air in northern Maine and warm, muggy air in southern and western Maine. Expect more clouds, but some times of hazy sun. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are likely along the front, especially in central and western Maine. These shouldn't be long-lasting, but if you'll be outside, have a back-up plan in case a storm pops up over your area.

SUNDAY

Sunday will be the least desirable day of the weekend. It looks cloudy, cool and raw as the front slides south of Maine, and a northeasterly wind comes in off the cool ocean. High temperatures may only be in the 50s at the coast. Inland towns have a shot at hitting 60, but even there, it looks unpleasant. The good news is there shouldn't be much heavy or steady rain. Instead, expect mist, drizzle and scattered showers.

MEMORIAL DAY

Monday has a shot at being better than Sunday. It doesn't look like a beautiful day, but if the clouds break for some sunshine, temperatures should hit the 60s. The highest chance for this is in central and western Maine. There again will be scattered showers around, especially in the afternoon.

The bottom line: Friday is the nicest day (if you're lucky enough to have a four-day weekend). Saturday is decent, Sunday is probably the worst, and I'm optimistic Monday is less chilly, but there still will be some showers around.

Follow our updates over the next few days. It can be tough pinpointing exactly where the showers will happen days in advance.
