Tuesday is going to be an active weather day beginning with dense fog and ending with nasty thunderstorms.

The marine layer is thick and loaded with moisture. A Dense Fog Advisory is up until mid-morning. You may encounter terrible visibility driving around this morning. Be safe. Of greater concern is the severe thunderstorm threat.

The National Weather Service has highlighted the Northeast for thunderstorms. The combination of dew points topping 70 degrees, temperatures nearing 80 degrees in spots and a cold front to initiate convection could lead to dangerous storms later today. All areas could see thunderstorms, but signs point to southern Maine for the highest risk.

Atmospheric energy coupled with changing wind speed and direction with height, known as shear, line up best over far southern areas.

The greatest threat is for damaging, straight-line wind gusts and flash flooding from training thunderstorms or supercells. Temporary street and parking lot flooding along with rapid rises on small streams and brooks could occur. It might be best to pull over to the side of the road if you get caught in one of these storms. The low level shear may be just enough to get some of these storms to spin or rotate. Rotating thunderstorms are known as supercells, and they're the most dangerous. If a supercell were to form, while unlikely, it could produce a brief, weak tornado.
