Conley Blog: Wicked Warm Up

It's going to get hot, but you don't have to.. Here are a few reminders about how to stay cool and stay safe.

Nerd stuff: A heat wave (in Maine) is three consecutive days of the high temperature at or above 90°. Some of us might make a run at this this weekend into early next week. But, even we don't technically get there, it's going to get hot.

From 1999 to 2010 there were 7,415 heat related deaths nationwide (CDC's website). That's an average of 618 people a year dying from things that are often completely preventable.

There are lots of things you can do to be safe when it's wicked hot. Stay in an air conditioned place if possible, don't over exert yourself, don't use the stove/oven, take cool showers or baths if you do feel warm, and drink lots of water (even if you're not thirsty).

But what about if you have to be outside? The drinking water even if you're not thirsty still applies, try to stay in the shade, weather light colored clothing, and take breaks. You sweat to cool your body, but when it's humid out that sweat can evaporate so you cannot cool down as fast.

And please DO NOT EVER leave your kids or pets in the car. The inside of a car heats up so quickly when it's even partly sunny out. Your car's glass windows make your car act like an oven, even with the window partially open.

Don't forget about your friends, family, and neighbors too. And give them a call and have them check on you.

If you ever have any questions about heat safety, or anything weather related, just ask :)
