DURHAM, Maine — A person was hospitalized Tuesday after the vehicle they were in hit a utility pole in West Durham.

Durham Fire and Rescue Chief Joseph Moore said fire and rescue personnel responded shortly before 11:30 a.m. to the area of 1266 Hallowell Rd., where they found a vehicle that had left the roadway and struck a utility pole.

The pole was snapped upon impact, which brought down wires, and Central Maine Power was brought in to make repairs.

It wasn't immediately known if the person hurt was the driver or a passenger in the vehicle, nor was their condition or identity released.

Maine State Police were assisting fire and rescue crews, which in addition to Durham included the Freeport Fire Department.

Hallowell Road, or Route 9, was expected to be closed for up to five to six hours from Rabbit Road to Cushing Road, CMP estimated.

Chief Moore said school bus travel would likely be affected, and the department was working with RSU 5 to provide updates.

Drivers in the area were asked to seek alternate routes.
