Portland officials say Turkey Bowl will happen next year

Fans in the stands feared this could be Portland-Deering's last Turkey Bowl.

PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - Deering beat cross-town rival Portland 22 to 20 in the 106th annual Turkey Bowl which is always played on Thanksgiving. But many people watching the game worry that this could be the last Turkey Bowl. There are concerns because there is less players on the field and in the stands.

But athletic officials at both schools say the city to committed to keep the tradition going. They also nixed suggestions to merge both teams to create one football program featuring players from both Deering and Portland.

'Our commitment is to keep it as long as possible, obviously we can't predict low numbers ten years ago it doesn’t mean it goes away we just need to change how we do things,' said Melanie Craig, Deering High Athletic Director.

Attendance for Thursday's game was about 1600 people.
