ORONO, Maine

(NEWS CENTER) -- Preseason has begun for the defending CAA champions. The University of Maine football team hit the practice field for the first time this season on Monday afternoon.

The defending champs will practice just about every day for the next three weeks as they prepare for the their season opener on August 30th at Alfond Stadium.

The Black Bears will throw a couple of scrimmages in the practice mix as well.

Eighteen seniors graduated from the program after last season, opening the playing field for position battles across the depth chart. Head Coach Jack Cosgrove says they'll be following each one very closely.

The team will split up and scrimmage for the first time on Monday, August 11th.
