Maine native selected 11th overall in NHL Draft

Eighteen-year-old Yarmouth native Oliver Wahlstrom was selected 11th overall by the New York Islanders. He's likely the highest ever Maine-born NHL draft pick.

DALLAS (NEWS CENTER Maine) -- Maine-born hockey player Oliver Wahlstrom has been turning heads toward the ice for more than half his life – an amazing feat considering he's only 18 years old.

We first told you about the Yarmouth native when he was just 9. A video was taken of him in a Portland Junior Pirates jersey competing in a shootout contest before a Bruins game. His amazing goal went viral and he became an internet sensation.

Years later, at 13, he was an internet sensation again when he verbally committed to the University of Maine hockey program before he even hit high school.

His plans, of course, changed, as most teenage plans do. Most recently, he played for the USA Hockey national development program.

Now, at 18, he's likely the highest ever Maine-born player to be drafted, selected 11th overall in the 2018 NHL Draft by the New York Islanders.

Biddeford's Brian Dumoulin was drafted 51st overall in 2009.

Mock drafts from national sports outlets predicted Wahlstrom would likely go in the top 10.

Walhstrom is a major scoring threat: He notched 48 goals along with 46 assists in 62 games last season. He has committed playing at Boston College.

If Walhstrom joins the Islanders after collegiate play in Boston, there's a chance the former Junior Pirate will play under ex-Pirates coach Barry Trotz, who was just recently hired as New York's head coach after leading Washington to its first Stanley Cup title in 2018.

The 2018 NHL Draft began Friday at 7:30 p.m. on NBC Sports.
