(NEWS CENTER Maine)-- Jack Rioux, the boys soccer coach at Mt. Ararat high school has this to say about Nick Merrill.

"I teach at the middle school, so all of the time when I use examples, we talk about Nick.... three sport athlete, great grades, what he does in the community.."

That's some pretty high praise being thrown Nick's way. As a soccer, basketball and baseball player, competition has always been a part of his life. When it comes to grades, competition is in Nick's DNA, coming from a family of teachers.

"They've always kind of been like, oh I did this well in high school and I did this well... So I have been like, hmmm maybe I should try to beat them...."

Nick is ranked 12th in his class and will be going to Bowdoin next year to study bio-chemistry. For his senior capstone project, Nick went back to his elementary school in Bowdoinham and started an after school math club. He had 20 kids sign up.
