Being involved in sports is so important to Kayla Dredge that she dedicates her time to York teams even when she's not playing. In the spring, she dominates on the softball diamond as a catcher and two-year captain. In the fall, she leads the way on the volleyball team. In winter, Kayla manages the girls' basketball team.
"I wash all the uniforms and I organize them and I fold them," says Kayla. "Whether it's home or away, I have them laid out so the girls don't have to worry if they left their shorts at home or forgot their warm up top."
It's that school spirit and attention to detail that teachers and fellow students love. Kayla was voted class president, is the national honors society secretary and also serves as the Vice President of the school's substance use awareness group. All that, plus her rigorous coursework, and she still finds time to volunteer at the hospital and hold down a part-time job.
"This is my second year at Anthony's Kitchen," says Kayla. "I'm a barista in the café so I make bagels, smoothies, and coffees. I get to deal with people at their worst in the morning and hopeful make their day a little bit better."
Kayla's smile is infectious, and her positivity rubs off on all those around her.
"Kayla just embodies everything you would want in a student, in an athlete, in a friend, in a mentor to younger students," says York Athletic Trainer Emily Castaline. "She is the epitome of an amazing student. She touches everyone in this building."
Kayla is headed to Wheaton College to study political science. One day, she might be a leader we all look to, and she says she'll owe it all to the great start she got in York.
"I can look back on the experiences, and if someone asks me where I learned whatever I am doing, I can say it all started with doing the things that I loved in high school," says Kayla.
Congratulations to Kayla Dredge, the newest member of the Varsity Club!
