Varsity Club: Cole Smith

Welcome to the Varsity Club, Cole!

(NEWS CENTER) -- You can't miss Cole Smith on the ice. He stands out as a four-year varsity player for the Messalonskee Eagles, and also as a leader. The senior captain can often be seen high-fiving his teammates and encouraging them to be the best they can be.

"My parents always taught me that you can be a leader before you even have a C on your jersey," says Smith. "I always try to lead by example."

Cole has been playing hockey since elementary school, but his first love involves a field. Cole was also captain of the Messalonskee soccer team, taking younger Eagles under his wing.

His sports success is only rivaled by his success in school. He's averaging a grade higher than 100. Math and science are the subjects where shines, and his future is just as bright. He's applying to some of the nations top schools, like MIT.

"I try to take as many science rigorous or mathematics rigorous courses as I can. I'm taking a class at Colby right now," Smith says.

If any of the colleges he's apply to are looking for a well rounded kid, they've found one. Cole mentors third grader named Micah for his local Big Borthers Big sisters program. He also helps his teammates are struggling academically.

"For me a huge thing is no grade no play," says Messalonskee hockey coach Kevin Castner. "I take a look at the grades and I see who needs help, and Cole and a couple other kids they jump right up and say yeah we can help him with that, we can tutor him."

Always a team player, on the ice and off.

Congratulations Cole Smith, the newest member of the Varsity Club.
