Black Bears fall to William & Mary, 27-20

The loss snaps the Black Bears' two-game winning streak.

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (NEWS CENTER Maine) -- Despite career-high performances by Earnest Edwards, the #16 Black Bears fell to William & Mary Saturday, 27-20.

Edwards hauled in nine receptions and put up 196 receiving yards, but the Tribe outscored Maine 13-3 in the second half.

Edwards, who totaled 326 all-purpose yards, turned in Maine's highest receiving output since Micah Wright posted nine catches for 198-yards against Elon in 2015.

Chris Ferguson finished the day 26-for-46, matching his career-high for the second straight week with 278-yards through the air.

Ramon Jefferson also turned in a career day, posting career-bests in carries (14) and rush yards (80) while tallying his first career rushing score.

Defensively, Maine limited William and Mary to just 33 net rush yards, an average of 1.1 yards per rush. The Black Hole held its ninth consecutive team to 100 rush yards or fewer. Taji Lowe tallied a career-best 11 tackles with a forced fumble and fumble recovery. Deshawn Stevens added 10 tackles including 2.5 for loss with a sack. The tackle total marked Steven's second straight week of totaling 10 or more stops.

The Black Bears finished the day 4-of-18 on third down opportunities, and faced an average 10 yards to gain on the critical down. The third down conversion total, coupled with three interceptions and 13 penalties, forced the Black Bears into tough situations all day.
