LEWISTON, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell announced his support for Cain at a campaign stop in Lewiston Thursday.

Cain is racking up endorsements in her bid to unseat an incumbent in the 2nd Congressional district, something no other candidate has done in a century.

Cain stumped for votes at Simones' Hot Dog Stand with Mitchell at her side. Cain told potential voters she will work to help the working poor and keep American jobs here at home.

Despite her support of Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton -- Cain says she is hoping to earn votes from both Republicans and Independents in November.

Cain says her opponent, Bruce Poliquin, represents special interests and not Mainers.

“He is out of touch with Maine people, whether it's the way he approaches the issues in Congress always siding with Wall Street over Maine or his votes to cut social security,” said Cain.

In a statement Poliquin said, “her record is extremely liberal, I have a proven record of working with Democrats and Independents in Congress, co-sponsoring their legislation and having them co-sponsor mine.”

A recent Boston Globe poll shows Poliquin ahead of Cain by 5-points.
