Democrats rally behind gubernatorial nominee Janet Mills

Through ranked-choice voting, it took Democrats more than a week longer than Republicans to arrive at a nominee in the race for governor

AUGUSTA (NEWS CENTER Maine) -- The Democrats who lost the primary to Janet Mills stood hand in hand with her at a party unity rally in Augusta Thursday morning.

All of the losing candidates pledged strong support for Mills as she begins the campaign against Republican Shawn Moody and independents Alan Caron and Terry Hayes.

Mills was declared the primary winner Wednesday night after the first statewide count of ballots using ranked-choice voting. She ended up with 54 percent of the vote after the ranked-choice process, while second place finisher Adam Cote had roughly 45 percent.

Mills said Thursday she believes many Maine people want to see an end to the division and lack of cooperation that has tied up state government for the past several years. She said, "I want to make government work again.”
