Feed Maine: Supplies and smiles in Brunswick

BRUNSWICK, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Everyone needs a helping hand once in a while, especially this time of year. Asking for help doesn't have to be a shameful experience.

Every Friday in Brunswick, there's a group of people handing out and picking up food, and having fun doing it. It's all thanks to a third grade teacher who believes helping others is one of the most important lessons for kids to learn.

Andrea Wilson sets up the small food donation site with the help of Midcoast Hunger Prevention. Kids who come in are encouraged to smile while they shop, pick out what they like and help out if they can.

"We're reducing the stigma around it and showing kids that it's okay to ask for help when you need it," says Wilson. "Helping each other is an important part of this."

Parents who visit to pick up food for their families say Andrea's program is especially impactful right before the holidays.

So far, our NEWS CENTER Feed Maine drive has raised more than $17,000 for the Good Shepherd Food Bank, which helps to fund and support program's like Andrea's in Brunswick. If you would like to donate, click here: https://www.gsfb.org/feed-maine-donate/
