Feed Maine: Giving back and needing help at the same time

(NEWS CENTER Maine)-- Bob Dixon spends part of each week volunteering at the Freeport food pantry helping people. It wasn't too long ago he was on the other side of the counter.

"I needed some assistance with food. I learned about the food pantry. And once I saw what they were doing, I felt I wanted to participate and help others with what they need in return for the help that I had received."

Bob's wife Holly also volunteered at the Pantry and now volunteers her time down the hall at the thrift shop. Both had come through some pretty tough times and were happy to give back. Then, things came crashing down, literally.

During the wind storm back in October, a tree came down on top of the Dixon's mobile home destroying everything. While they wait for things to be replaced, a hotel room is where the Dixon's call home, which makes healthy eating a challenge, once again.

"When you're staying in a hotel room, it's obviously hard to cook good meals. So during this period, we are once again, receiving food assistance from the food pantry that we volunteer at, for which we are very grateful"
