Maine woman pleaded not guilty to murdering elderly woman who employed her

Sarah Richards of South Thomaston entered a not guilty plea in a Rockland courtroom. Police say Richards beat and strangled Helen Carver in her own home.

ROCKLAND, Maine — Sarah Richards of South Thomaston entered a not guilty plea in the murder of an elderly woman who occasionally employed her.

According to The Courier-Gazette, Richards entered the plea in a Rockland courtroom Tuesday, May 28. She remains in jail without bail.

Police say Richards beat and strangled Carver in her own home back in February. Carver reportedly hired Richards to shovel her driveway and do other odd jobs around the house. 

Investigators say Richards eventually told them Carver was upset over a stolen debit card and the elderly woman 'came at her.' They also claim her story changed several times.
