Have any unwanted firearms or ammunition?

The Maine Gun Safety Coalition will collect them Saturday, May 11, at the following seven police departments in southern Maine.

Unique to Maine, the "Guns to Garden Tools" program sends the donated guns to Raw Tools, a metal forging organization, where they're turned into garden tools, shipped back to Maine and sold in the greater Portland area.

"Even an unwanted and neglected gun sitting somewhere in your house still presents a risk of an accidental shooting, a suicide, or a theft, where the gun can later be used to commit a crime," President of the Maine Gun Safety Coalition, William Harwood said in a statement released Friday. "Saturday, May 11th being the day before Mother's Day is the perfect time to get that gun out of your house and make families across our region safer."
