SOUTH PORTLAND (NEWS CENTER Maine) — Police in South Portland are asking the public for assistance in identifying a burglary suspect caught on surveillance at the same time eight different commercial businesses were broken into and stolen from.

Police said the businesses, mainly small, cash dependent local entities located along Gorham Road and Maine Mall Road, were broken into sometime early Sunday morning.

Employees arrived at work and discovered evidence of the break-ins. Police said in all instances the doors were pried open with a crowbar or a similar type of tool and cash was taken from cash registers.

Detectives believe the burglar based on surveillance evidence parked their vehicle in a parking lot along Western Avenue at about 10:30 p.m. Saturday and didn't return until about 4:30 a.m. Sunday.

The suspect is described by police as a heavyset white male with dark-rimmed glasses dressed that morning in all dark clothing, including gloves. They said the vehicle used appears to be a Nissan or Toyota type four-door sedan.

Police said due to the fact the suspect made no real attempt to disguise his face, it's possible he's not from the immediate area.

Anyone who recognizes the suspect or may have seen him in the area at the time of the burglaries is asked to contact Det. Scott Corbett at 207-799-5511 Ext 7449. The anonymous tip line is 207-347-4100.
