WINTER HARBOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- One of the lesser known portions of Acadia National Park is not on Mount Desert Island but rather on the mainland just south of Winter Harbor.

The Schoodic Peninsula includes about 2,300 acres that is considered part of Acadia National Park.

The Park service has done a lot of work there lately adding campgrounds, biking trails, and hiking trails.

From the 440 foot Schoodic, Head visitors can enjoy sweeping vistas of Cadillac Mountain and the Eastern shore of Mount Desert Island.

There is ferry service from Bar Harbor to the Schoodic Peninsula.

By water, the distance between harbors is only 4 miles but, if you drive the coastal route it's more like 40.

However, many visitors say the venture is well worth the ride for the peace and quiet the peninsula offers.
