SKOWHEGAN, Maine — A police detective in a Maine town has changed his plea to a domestic assault charge to guilty and will avoid a trial that had been scheduled for this week.
Thirty-seven-year-old Skowhegan Sgt. Don Avery has entered a plea of guilty to a misdemeanor charge of assault. He was charged with assaulting his ex-wife.
The Morning Sentinel reports Avery, who now lives in North Anson, had previously pleaded not guilty. District Attorney Maeghan Maloney says Avery's status as a law enforcement officer is up to Maine Criminal Justice Academy.
Skowhegan Town Manager Christine Almand also says it's too soon to say what Avery's job status will be. Avery's attorney, John Richardson of Topsham, has previously said the case results from a contentious divorce. He didn't return a call Friday.
