Political Brew: Breaking down the primaries as the votes are tabulated

As we await the results of a couple of ranked choice vote counts, NEWS CENTER Maine political analysts size up the races for the fall.

PORTLAND

(NEWS CENTER)--

Former state senator Phil Harriman says Shawn Moody dominated the GOP primary for governor by connecting with Republicans all over the state, not just in certain pockets, something Harriman says should serve Moody well in November.

Former Speaker of the House John Richardson agrees that Moody is likable and had a strong message. But Richardson adds that Moody grabbed support that might have gone to former DHHS Commissioner Mary Mayhew because Moody profited from the LePage political machine.

The winner of the Democratic nomination for governor won't be known until the ranked choice votes are counted. Richardson, a Democrat, thinks Janet Mills, who has a five point lead over Adam Cote, will be the nominee, and for those who want experience in a candidate, Richardson thinks that bodes well.

The Democratic nominee for Congress in Maine's second district is still unknown, but Jared Golden appears most likely to prevail in ranked choice voting. Phil Harriman, a Republican, thinks Golden has a strategic advantage because he hails from the densely populated Lewiston-Auburn area. Harriman says if Golden can hold that base and make inroads elsewhere in the sprawling district, he will give Rep. Bruce Poliquin a run for his money.

Harriman and Richardson also discuss the potential impact of ranked choice voting in November for Sen. Angus King and Rep. Chellie Pingree, and tackle the special session of the legislature expected this week.
