(NEWS CENTER) -- Brunswick police say 29-year-old Robert LaChance from Brunswick has been summonsed with aggravated cruelty to animals after police say he repeatedly struck and threw his dog against a wall back on Feb. 28.
Police say the dog, Buddy, was already suffering from an untreated fractured leg, which occurred approximately one week prior to the February incident.
Buddy's leg has since been amputated.
LaChance no longer has custody of Buddy, who is being treated at an undisclosed veterinary location, until new ownership can be provided. Police say LaCahnce is trying to get his dog back.
LaChance is currently scheduled to appear in Cumberland County Superior Court, in Portland, on May 17. Marc Hagan of the Brunswick PD says Robert LaChance faces up to 5 years for assaulting his dog Buddy.
