PROSPECT, Maine (NEWS CENTER) — Maine State Police said the shotgun they took from a woman on the Penobscot Narrows Bridge was loaded.

Drivers who first saw the woman began calling police around 10:30 a.m. on Thursday. According to their accounts, she carried her gun onto the bridge from the Prospect side, and after crossing over to the Verona Island side, she sat with her gun on the railing.

Police shut down traffic as they talked to the woman using the loud speakers hooked up to a cruiser. By 11:15 a.m., police said the woman complied with their requests to put down the gun and surrender herself into their custody. The roadblock was then lifted after a stoppage of 20 minutes.

The woman was taken from the bridge to a hospital in Bangor for evaluation with no charges brought against her. Although police did not release her name, they gave her age to be 54 years old.
