Organization helps keep seniors at home

An organization called Homeinstead works to keep seniors in their own homes so they don't have to move to care facilities.

BLUE HILL, Maine — As people age, things get more difficult and many seniors aren't able to stay in their own homes.

An organization called Homeinstead helps seniors do just that by identifying hazards in the home. Like a throw rug or a poorly placed piece of furniture.

The organization says most seniors want to age at home but many of them don't have plans to do so.

So Homeinstead has created helpful tips to keep seniors safe in their forever home, wherever that may be.

"94% of 500 people surveyed recently show they want to stay at home. They ideally like to stay at their own home because their memories are here but if they can't do that then maybe they'll move to a more appropriate home but still they want to be in their neighborhood or their town," Cheryl Sheasby, Homeinstead Blue Hill branch, said.

The organization is holding a seminar to help seniors with tips and tricks to stay in their home on June 11 from 4-6 p.m. at Blue Hill Public, 5 Park Point Rd. in Blue Hill.
