Woman from Jay offering 'free food for kids'

(NEWS CENTER Maine)-- Since I was fortunate enough to have been put on our 'Feed Maine' campaign, I have seen first hand the struggle the families have putting food on the table. It's especially hard when you think about the children. In Maine, 1 in every 5 children is food insecure. While they are in school, kids have access to breakfast and lunch 5 days a week. That can change in the summer months. Stacy Greenleaf from Jay, is taking a class at U-Maine Augusta and started learning about the food issues that face our state's children, and she wanted to do something. ""That's the number that sticks in my head the most.. the 1 in 5.. in my opinion that is just awful" said Stacy.

What she decided to do was make brown bag lunches for anyone who wants them. She puts them on her porch from 3pm-7pm daily and they are free. Her hope is to fill the gap between lunch on one day and breakfast the next. Her social media posting of her plan has taken off and dozens have offered to help, while hundreds have shared her idea. "I believe good things will come. The outpouring of support the people who have reached out to me. I think this could get big. I think this could go help a lot of people and I can't wait to start helping"

People like Stacy, who are willing to help do their part in our state's food insecurity issue, there is hope that someday, no child will be forced to go hungry.
