William Ellsworth, a substance abuse counselor who worked closely with the county sheriff's office, died in the crash.

NOBLEBORO (NEWS CENTER Maine) -- The Lincoln County Sheriff's office is investigating a traffic collision that claimed the life of a substance abuse counselor who worked closely with the sheriff's office.

The victim was identified Thursday as William Ellsworth, 80, of Newcastle.

Police said Ellsworth was traveling to a group counseling session with his wife, Lois Ellsworth, on Thursday morning when his 2017 Ford Escape struck an oncoming 2005 Chevrolet Avalanche on Route 1.

The driver of the pickup was identified as Ronald Shellman, 45, of Waldoboro.

Shellman and the Ellsworths were taken to the Lincoln Health Miles Campus Emergency Room in Damariscotta, where William Ellsworth died of his injuries.

Lois Ellsworth sustained broken bones and was transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland, police said. Shellman was treated and released from the hospital.

Drugs and alcohol were not determined to be factors in the crash. Seatbelts were worn by everyone involved.
