BELFAST, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Sunday is a pretty special day in Maine. It is National Lobster Day, meant to recognize all those who take part in the iconic industry here in Maine.

The Senate passed a resolution back in July. Senators Angus King and Susan Collins introduced it several months ago. The day is meant to recognize and pay tribute to the lobster industry because it is such a large part of Maine's economy.

Specifically Maine is the country’s biggest lobster producer. The resolution is also meant to recognize those to catch and produce lobster around the United States as well, citing that more than 120 million pounds of lobster are caught every year in United States waters.

The resolution states that lobster export values have more than doubled since 2009. The resolution was also co-sponsored by other Senators across New England.
