'Happy holidays' is easy to say, but harder to embody

Instead of the usual litany of chores, licensed family and marriage therapist Jack Burke offers an alternative checklist to reenergize your holiday spirit
Like Santa, Jack Burke also keeps a holiday list. But instead of keeping track of gift requests, Jack runs through suggestions to help foster a happier outlook

PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- As a greeting, "happy holidays" rolls off the tongue easily. But as an ideal, happiness is not always so easy to achieve around the holidays.

Between the long hours of shopping for presents, baking cookies and mailing cards, the simple joys of the season sometimes get lost along the way.

Along with that list of chores, licensed family and marriage therapist Jack Burke offered an alternative checklist in his weekly Therapy Thursday segment to help reenergize your holiday spirit:

  • Charity
  • Compassion
  • Ethics
  • Tolerance
  • Play

Jack borrowed the list from the Dalai Lama. Each point serves as a reminder that true happiness lies in the pursuit of more meaningful activities instead of acquiring possessions and status.
