More snow means Shawnee Peak is set for earliest open in years

The heavy, wet snow might be bad for your morning commute, but its a blessing for Maine ski areas.

BRIDGTON (NEWS CENTER Maine) – With more than a foot of snow expected inland, Shawnee Peak has decided to move up its opening weekend to the earliest in five years.

“We are psyched for such an early start,” Rachel Wilkinson, a spokesperson for the ski area said.

The slopes are set to open at 8:30 Saturday morning.

Tuesday’s storm added to the than 20 inches of snow on the ground—providing a great base for crews to groom.

Up to 14 inches of snow is expected in the Bridgton area Tuesday.

Other Maine ski areas, including Sugarloaf and Sunday River are already open with about half of their trails ready to go.

The heavy, wet snow downed trees and knocked out power to the Bridgton area early in Tuesday morning, but Wilkinson said they will be ready to go by Saturday.

“It’s nice snow, a deep amount of snow and it’s really making people think about coming out and skiing,” Wilkinson said. “So I think we’re all really looking forward to a good strong start to our season.”
