Messy storm tonight into Tuesday | Maine Weather Blog

Another storm is on the way and the rain-snow line will come into play near the coast.

Monday will be mostly cloudy and cool, with any steady precipitation waiting until Monday evening and night.

The storm itself will take a track that's unfavorable for all snow in southern and central Maine. The center of low pressure will parallel the southern coast, bringing rain into the coast. However, this is a favorable track for heavy snow in the foothills and mountains, where double digit totals are likely.

Light precipitation will move into western Maine Monday evening. It'll be rain near the coast, but a mix or snow farther north. The precipitation won't start until after midnight in northern and eastern Maine.

By Tuesday morning, the rain-snow line is likely to set up somewhere in southern and central Maine. Where it sets up will be huge, because on the cold side it'll be snowing hard, 1 to 2 inches per hour. Expect heavy snow in the foothills and mountains and perhaps as far south as Lewiston, Augusta, and Sebago Lake. On the warmer side near the coast, it'll be a windswept rain.

The precipitation will lighten up during the day in central and southern Maine, but it'll continue into the evening in northern Maine.

This will be a big storm for the mountains and foothills, with double digit totals likely. It's likely going to be mainly rain, with some snow mixing in close to the coast.

Right now, I'm thinking totals will be minimal near the water's edge, but may increase quickly inland.

The challenge is along the Maine Turnpike and I-95. How much mixing with rain will happen in places like Lewiston, Augusta, and Bangor? It will mean the difference between a slushy accumulation and several inches of wet, heavy snow. Any slight change of 10 to 15 miles will have an impact in this region.
