Maine's spring turkey season gets started for young hunters

AUGUSTA, Maine — Maine's spring season for hunting turkeys is getting started with a special day dedicated to young hunters.

Saturday is Youth Spring Wild Turkey Day in Maine. The rest of the season begins on Monday and runs until June 1. It's legal to bag two bearded turkeys in most of the state, though hunting is more limited in far northern Maine.

Wild turkeys are common on the Maine landscape. The big birds have made such a recovery in the state that some residents consider them a nuisance.

State lawmakers are considering adding a second youth turkey day in the fall. That day would happen around the time of the fall turkey hunt.
